Tetra Tech Rizzo History
Central Artery/Tunnel Project Fuels Growth
When private development projects declined in the late 1980’s, Rizzo Associates promoted its services to public clients that included most of the state agencies in Massachusetts and several of its cities and towns. Harold Fitzgerald, who joined the firm in 1989, helped us to secure key design services work on Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel Project. Harold was Project Manager on this endeavor which was one of the biggest highway undertakings in the world and further fueled our growth through the 1990’s. At one time, there were 30 Rizzo engineers assigned to this one project.
Our Natick-based firm branched out with the opening of an Enfield, Connecticut, office in 1988, which later evolved into a permanent branch office in Hartford. John Adams became the Hartford Office’s Regional Manager. In 1992, Rizzo Associates became an employee-owned company. This was a watershed moment in Rizzo history – giving every employee the opportunity for ownership and proving to be an important employee retention mechanism.
The firm secured two major contracts in the early ‘90’s: an Environmental Services Contract for USPS and the Boston Water & Sewer Commission’s CSO Project. In 1998, we acquired Sam Park Associates. Private development projects started to filter back and, the following year, Rizzo Associates attained another milestone. The firm secured work on the New England Patriots’ Gillette Stadium, allowing us to provide our full range of services to that project including site/civil, water/wastewater, and transportation planning and design services, and natural resources management. The company soon grew to 230 employees, and Rizzo Associates expanded its services into New Hampshire by opening its second branch office in Manchester. more
